Attakathi is a movie, written and directed by Ranjith Jeyakumar. It was screened in the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India. The film is named Attakathi because it talks about how people live in this land right on the border with Tamil Nadu. It stars Dulip Kumar, who plays Appu, Gopi Menon who plays Radhakrishnan and Lakshmi Priyan who has played Jaya. This movie also talks to you about friendship, love and relationships between people.
The story is about best friends called Appu (Dulip Kumar) and Radhakrishnan (Gopi Menon). Appu is a graduate who often visits his grandmother (Sathyapriya) in the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He likes taking part in dramas, while waiting for something more to happen. He meets Jaya (Lakshmi Priyan), who also has already graduated, while he is going to see a play. They become friends. She dreams of going abroad to work as a social worker. She does not want to marry for she thinks that it would be a waste of time for her studies. They become friends and watch movies together. They go to different places and enjoy themselves. Jaya tells Appu that she loves him, but Appu does not understand this love at the beginning so he avoids these situations. One day when they want to watch a movie, it gets cancelled so they go for another movie which is about the partition of India so they miss the bus. They decide to sleep at a "dhaba" (roadside inn), but the owner of that "dhaba" does not allow them because he thinks that they would steal something from his shop because they are strangers in his place. Appu has to stay in the "dhaba" at night. The next day Appu and Jaya plan to see the place where they slept, Appu suggests that they go to Tamil Nadu, but Jaya cannot because her parents would not allow it. They come back after buying some food for dinner but their bus has also left so they have to take another bus for 3 hours. Appu tells Jaya's parents about his love with Jaya. She likes him so much but he does not understand these feelings at all which makes him afraid of everything else in life apart from studying and acting. But Appu's father says to him "have you seen how he looks at you? He looks at you as his friend so it is better to be a friend". One day, Jaya gets ready from her house to go to Appu's house to tell him about her love. While she walks through a garden, a man who is a neighbour of Appu's father sees her and thinks that she is the daughter-in-law of his neighbour. So he calls out even though she tells him that she does not know him. He talks with them and then goes into the house. Thereafter, he convinces her parents as well as Appu's father about the same thing.
